About Us
The West Milford Animal Shelter is the only animal shelter in NJ that is operated completely by volunteers. All volunteers are members of the West Milford Animal Shelter Society (WMASS). WMASS volunteers donate over 1,200 hours per month at the facility and have established a trusting and caring environment for the over 1,000 animals that arrive at our shelter each year. Our annual adoption rate is 80% (the national average rate is 20-25 %).We provide educational programs for community service groups, schools and clubs.
LOW COST SPAY/ NEUTER CERTIFICATES CAN BE PURCHASED AT THE SHELTER. All services are provided by local veterinarians.
We also have a Sponser-A-Pet (SAP) program, for anyone wishing to contribute funds to provide for the care of any of our animals.Sponser-A-Pet can make a wonderful and thoughtful gift. while this program is still in effect, we are in the midst of enhancing our program... we'll keep you informed!

Adoptions and Fees...
The WMASS volunteers work very hard to find good, permanent, loving homes for the adoptable animals in our care. Anyone interested in adopting a cat or dog from our facility is required to fill out a pre-adoption form before viewing any animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm (and treated if neccesary), and cats are tested for feline leukemia and FIV. ONLY cats who test negative are placed for adoption. Both dogs and cats are de-wormed and are up to date on distemper and rabies shots. All ADULT dogs and cats are spayed or neutered before leaving our facility. Puppies and kittens require a $50.00 surgical deposit at adoption time. The deposit is returned to the new owner when proof of spay/neuter is provided by the veterinarian.
Adoption Fees are
- Dogs or Puppies $75.00*
- Cats or Kittens $35.00*
*Surgical Deposit: For all unaltered animals, a $25.00 deposit ,made at the time of adoption, will be returned when copy of spay/neuter certificate is presented to WMASS.
Volunteers...are always needed
Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization and the key ingredient to the success of our shelter. We are always looking for good, dedicated, adult volunteers. You must be 16 to work with cats, and 18 to work with dogs. There is always cleaning, feeding and nurturing for the animals to be done. We work 7 days a week - 365 days a year. Caring for these otherwise forgotten animals is a very rewarding and gratifying feeling. Volunteers are also needed to assist on areas that do not require direct contact with any animals, i.e, washing dishes, doing laundry or following up on paper work. Please feel free to contact us directly for more information on joining the WMASS volunteer team.
